Amherst Zoning Bylaws may allow for the addition of a supplementary apartment by Special Permit for owner-occupied dwellings. (Amherst Zoning Bylaws, Section 5.011).
The town may also allow one or more units to be added to the existing house; Converted Dwelling: Section 3.3241, by Special Permit and at the discretion of the Zoning Board of Appeals (1-4 units)
